History

Christ Church is the oldest church in the Diocese of Northwestern PA (originally the Diocese of Erie).

The church was founded January 25, 1825 by Rev. John Henry Hopkins D. D., Rector of Trinity Church, Philadelphia. (Rev. Hopkins later became Bishop of Vermont.) Many of the first members were from Philadelphia and named the church in honor of their home church, Old Christ Church. The first sancturary was consecrated August 26, 1828, with the first Rector, Rev. Charles Smith, conducting the service.

Eventually it was decided that a new, larger sanctuary was necessary. The original building was torn down and on June 15, 1883 the cornerstone for the present church was laid. The new sanctuary was consecrated on Sunday, March 23, 1884 by the Bishop of Pittsburgh, the Rt. Rev. Cortland Whitehead, D. D.
